How WPM is calculated

This test uses the common convention of five correct characters per word. Correct characters are divided by five and then by elapsed minutes. Accuracy is the share of entered characters matching the same position in the passage. This method lets punctuation and spaces contribute consistently, but another test may use completed dictionary words or different error rules.

Worked example

If 225 characters match during a one-minute attempt, the result is 45 WPM because 225 divided by five equals 45. If ten additional entered characters are wrong, accuracy is about 96 percent. Correcting an error restores matching characters, so careful recovery can improve both measures.

Get a useful baseline

Use the same duration and a comfortable keyboard for several attempts. One unusually fast or slow result says little. A two- or five-minute test reduces the influence of a lucky opening, while a one-minute test is convenient for frequent practice. Sit comfortably, keep wrists neutral, and stop if typing causes pain.

What changes a result

Passage familiarity, punctuation, keyboard layout, device size, autocorrect, fatigue, and editing strategy all affect speed. Mobile typing and physical-keyboard typing are not directly comparable. Browser scheduling can also introduce small timing variation, although this page calculates elapsed time from a monotonic clock instead of counting interval callbacks.

Privacy and limitations

Keystrokes entered in the test stay in the page. Only the highest WPM value is optionally kept in local browser storage. The score is practice feedback, not an identity check, proctored examination, accessibility assessment, employment certificate, or promise of performance in another task.

Typing Speed Test FAQ

Do corrected mistakes still count?

The current text is compared with the passage, so properly corrected positions count as correct.

Why do sites report different WPM?

Passages, durations, error penalties, word definitions, and rounding rules differ.

Where is my best result stored?

Locally in this browser only. It is not uploaded or shared.
