Preview your camera before a call

Press Start camera and allow the browser to use your webcam. Check the live picture, lighting, framing, and displayed stream dimensions. Download snapshot saves one PNG frame to your device. The microphone is not requested by this test.

Selecting a camera

After permission is granted, the camera list can show connected USB webcams, laptop cameras, or phone cameras exposed by your browser. Choosing another camera releases the previous stream; press Start camera again to use the new selection. If a device disappears, choose System default and retry. A camera used through a virtual-camera application must also be available to the browser.

Worked example: checking a USB webcam

Connect a USB webcam and start with System default. If the preview still shows the laptop camera's view, select the USB webcam by name and start again. A displayed size of 640 × 480 means this stream contains 640 horizontal and 480 vertical pixels. It does not mean the camera cannot produce a larger picture in another application or with different capture settings.

Understanding the preview

The picture is shown without an extra mirror transform. Some meeting applications mirror your self-view, so text on a shirt or wall may appear different there. The displayed frame rate comes from browser-reported capture settings, when available. It is not a measurement of frames successfully transmitted to another person, and this page does not run a network video call.

Troubleshooting a blank picture

Open any physical privacy shutter, check the cable, and confirm that the operating system permits camera access. A permission denial may need to be changed in the browser's site controls before trying again. If the camera is busy, close software that may hold exclusive access. A dark but live preview usually needs more light or an uncovered lens rather than a different file format.

Privacy and limitations

The tool displays the camera stream locally and does not send pictures to a server. Downloading a snapshot is optional and saves only the current frame. Stop, changing devices, hiding the page, and navigation release the camera. The test does not certify maximum resolution, focus accuracy, color calibration, or compatibility with a particular meeting service. Downloaded snapshots remain wherever your browser saves them.

Webcam Test FAQ

Can I test my microphone here?

Use the separate Microphone Test. Keeping the two checks separate makes it clear which permission each tool requests.

Why are camera names missing initially?

Browsers often hide device labels until permission has been granted. Start the camera once to populate the list.

Will it work on a phone?

It can use cameras exposed by a compatible mobile browser. Device selection, permission prompts, and camera availability vary by platform.
