Paver area, joints, and waste

The repeating footprint is paver length plus joint width multiplied by paver width plus joint width. Patio area is converted to square inches and divided by that footprint. Waste is applied to the unrounded quantity before the result rounds up to a whole paver. This area method is useful for early purchase planning, but edge cuts still need a separate layout.

Worked example: a square patio

A 10-by-10-foot patio has 100 square feet of area. With 12-by-12-inch pavers, zero joint width, and zero waste, the estimate is 100 pavers. Packs of 20 require five packs. A 4-inch compacted base is about 1.235 cubic yards, while a 1-inch sand bed is about 0.309 cubic yards. At 2 currency units per paver, the paver purchase cost is 200.

Why pack rounding changes the price

The purchase cost uses all pavers in the whole packs, not just the calculated need. In the example, adding 10 percent waste requires 110 pavers. Six packs supply 120, so the cost becomes 240 at the same unit price. If your supplier sells individually, enter one paver per pack. Enter a unit price in your own currency; there is no currency conversion.

Base and bedding quantities

For each layer, square feet multiplied by depth in inches and divided by 324 gives cubic yards. The base result represents the entered compacted depth. Loose delivered aggregate may require a different quantity, depending on compaction and supplier measurement. Bedding sand is separate from joint-filling or polymeric sand, which this tool does not estimate. Base extensions outside the patio boundary are also excluded.

Assumptions and limitations

Use one rectangular paver size and a rectangular footprint. Mixed-size kits, circles, diagonal cuts, herringbone layouts, borders, and unusually large joints require a pattern-specific takeoff. Default layer depths are editable example inputs, not installation recommendations. Drainage, soil, frost, expected loads, edge restraints, and product instructions determine appropriate construction. Price excludes aggregate, sand, delivery, labor, and tax.

Should I count built-in spacers?

Check whether the manufacturer's published dimensions already represent installed coverage. Avoid adding the same spacing twice.

Can I enter no sand?

Yes. A zero depth returns zero volume for that layer. Use the values required by your chosen system.

Are leftover pack pavers waste?

They are extra purchased pieces. Keep them distinct from the allowance for cuts and breakage; some may be useful for later repairs.
