Measure the plantable shape first
This worksheet begins with one rectangle. Measure in feet and subtract the combined square footage of beds, paving, sheds, or other complete exclusions. For an irregular lawn, divide it into simple rectangles, calculate each section separately, and add their plantable areas before applying one allowance.
Calculation method
Gross area is length multiplied by width. Plantable area is gross area minus exclusions. The calculator multiplies that remainder by one plus the allowance percentage, divides by the entered coverage per unit, and rounds up. Supplier coverage is an input because sod dimensions and packaging vary.
Worked example
A 40-by-25-foot rectangle covers 1,000 square feet. Subtracting a 100-square-foot patio leaves 900 square feet. A 10 percent allowance raises the planning area to 990 square feet. If each roll covers 10 square feet, the estimate is 99 rolls.
Choose an allowance for the actual layout
Straight, accurately measured rectangles usually create fewer offcuts than curves, narrow strips, trees, diagonal boundaries, or many obstacles. An allowance is not a guarantee. Confirm whether supplier quantities already include overlap, unusable edges, or packaging loss before ordering.
Ordering and installation limits
Sod is perishable, and suppliers may sell by piece, roll, pallet, or fixed delivery quantity. This result does not choose a grass variety, test soil, plan irrigation, schedule delivery, calculate pallet weight, or give installation advice. Match the unit coverage to the supplier's current product.
Assumptions and limitations
All dimensions describe horizontal plan area. Slopes, curved boundaries, partial exclusions, measurement error, seams, damaged pieces, minimum orders, and supplier rounding can change the amount needed. Verify measurements and product coverage before purchasing.
