Counting both end positions
Wall length in inches is divided by stud spacing and rounded up to the number of intervals. One more stud accounts for the starting end. A wall that is not an exact spacing multiple has a shorter final interval. This is a baseline count along the entered length; actual layout offsets, corner details, and openings can change where individual pieces belong.
Worked example: a ten-foot partition estimate
A 10-foot wall is 120 inches long. Dividing by 16-inch spacing gives 7.5 intervals, which rounds up to eight. Including the first end produces nine regular studs. If your plan adds two more, the baseline purchase count is eleven. With three plate layers and 8-foot stock, each 10-foot layer needs two boards. The estimate therefore shows six plate boards and 30 installed linear feet.
Why plate boards are counted per layer
Pooling all plate footage can hide unusable offcuts. This calculator rounds each layer's wall length up to whole stock boards before multiplying by the number of layers. That conservative method does not assume an offcut from one layer can finish another. It also does not prove that the proposed splice locations are acceptable; check those against the framing plan before cutting.
Additional studs and allowances
Use the additional-stud field for a count you have already established from the plan. The calculator does not infer king studs, jack studs, corner assemblies, intersections, or other opening details. It also does not subtract regular studs behind openings automatically. The extra percentage applies to regular plus additional studs, with one final rounding step. Plate boards have their own whole-board rounding and do not receive that percentage.
Assumptions and limitations
This is a purchase-planning estimate, not a framing design or code check. It does not select member sizes, stud heights, species, grades, headers, connectors, fastening schedules, or load capacity. The displayed default spacing and layer count are example inputs. Use the details specified for your project. Wall height is deliberately absent because counting pieces does not establish their correct cut length.

What happens at an exact spacing multiple?
A 16-foot wall at 16 inches has twelve intervals and thirteen regular stud positions, including both ends.
Can I estimate several walls together?
Calculate them separately so each wall receives its own end positions and plate rounding. Combining their lengths can undercount those boundaries.
Can I exclude plates?
Yes. Set plate layers to zero. Plate linear footage and stock-board count both become zero while the stud estimate remains available.
