What the estimate measures
The calculator compares flat surface area with the nominal face area of a rectangular tile. It works for floors, straight walls, and simple backsplash sections. Length times width gives square feet. Tile inches are converted to square feet before division, so mixed input units do not distort the count.
Worked example
A 10-by-12-foot floor covers 120 square feet. A 12-by-12-inch tile covers one square foot, so perfect coverage requires 120 tiles. With a 10% allowance, the planning total becomes 132 tiles. Because stores sell whole pieces, any fractional result rounds up rather than down.
Choosing a waste allowance
Ten percent is a common planning starting point for a straightforward rectangular layout, but it is not a rule. Diagonal patterns, many corners, narrow cuts, breakage risk, pattern matching, irregular rooms, and inexperienced installation can require more. A simple grid in an open rectangle may use less. Ask the installer or supplier when the material is costly, special-order, or difficult to match later.
Measure the actual tiled surface
Split L-shaped floors or walls with openings into rectangles, calculate each section, and add them. Subtract large untiled openings only when appropriate. Small exclusions may not reduce purchases because cut pieces and layout constraints still consume material. Grout-joint width is omitted; for typical joints it has a small area effect, while exact row planning requires a layout drawing.

This is a quantity estimate, not an installation plan. It does not account for tiles per carton, batch variation, trim pieces, mosaics on mesh, grout, adhesive, underlayment, movement joints, slope, labor, or structural requirements. Confirm package coverage and order rules on the product label. Keep spare matching tiles when future repair matters.
