Choose feet, inches, or meters

The calculator starts in feet. The selected unit applies to all six length measurements, including roll width, pattern repeat, and trimming. Switching units converts values already entered; it does not reinterpret them as new measurements. Use decimal feet for mixed measurements: 8 feet 6 inches is 8.5 feet, or choose inches and enter 102. A 53-centimeter roll is 0.53 meters wide. Blank fields stay blank, and spare rolls remain a whole count.

Measure the paper you will actually order

Retail packaging can describe single rolls, double rolls, or panels. Enter the physical width and continuous length supplied in one purchasable unit. The purchase count is meaningful only when those dimensions match the product. Check the selected unit before typing dimensions from a label that uses a different measurement system.

Why this counts strips instead of area

A roll can contain enough square meters but still be too short to cut the required full-height strips. The calculator adds trimming to the wall height, rounds that cut length up to a whole pattern repeat, and divides roll length by cut length. Only whole strips count. Wall width divided by roll width rounds up to the required strip count, which is then divided by strips per roll and rounded up again.

Worked example: a straight-match feature wall

The starting example is a 12-foot-wide, 8-foot-high wall with rolls 1.75 feet wide and 33 feet long. A 2-foot repeat and 0.5 feet of trimming produce 10-foot cuts. Seven strips fit three per roll, so buy three rolls. Switching to inches shows the same job as a 144-by-96-inch wall with 120-inch cuts; the roll count stays three.

For a metric example, choose meters and enter a 4-by-2.4-meter wall, rolls 0.5 meters wide and 10 meters long, 0.1 meters of trimming, and a 0.3-meter repeat. Eight strips require three rolls, with each strip cut to 2.7 meters. Adding one spare roll changes the purchase count to four.

Doors, windows, and leftover pieces

Keep openings in the measured wall width for this conservative estimate. Simply subtracting window area can underestimate full strips needed beside the opening. Leftovers may cover short spaces above a door, but matching the pattern and keeping the correct direction matter. Make a wall-by-wall cutting plan before counting those offcuts as savings.

Assumptions and limitations

This calculation supports plain paper and straight vertical repeats. Half-drop, offset, large murals, sloped ceilings, separate panels, and patterns that require alternating lengths need a product-specific cutting plan. Different-height walls are treated as the tallest entered height. A roll shorter than one complete cut produces an error. The unused-length figure excludes the spare rolls you add.
