Volume choices

Volume mode includes US teaspoon, tablespoon, fluid ounce, cup, pint, quart, and gallon plus milliliter and liter. Relationships use US customary volume definitions: 3 teaspoons per tablespoon, 2 tablespoons per fluid ounce, 8 fluid ounces per cup, 2 cups per pint, 2 pints per quart, and 4 quarts per gallon. One US fluid ounce equals 29.5735295625 milliliters.

Weight choices

Weight mode includes ounce, pound, gram, and kilogram. One pound is 16 ounces, and one international avoirdupois pound is exactly 453.59237 grams. These are mass relationships. A fluid ounce is a volume unit and appears only in volume mode; an ounce by weight appears only in weight mode.

Worked examples

Two US cups convert to about 473.176 milliliters. Eight tablespoons equal one-half US cup. Twelve ounces by weight equal 340.194 grams. Those examples do not say how many cups twelve ounces of an ingredient occupies, because flour, sugar, butter, water, and other ingredients have different densities and measuring behavior.

Recipe standards can differ

A “cup” is not identical in every recipe tradition. This page uses a US customary cup of 236.5882365 milliliters, not a 250-milliliter metric cup or another regional definition. Australian tablespoons may also differ from the US tablespoon used here. Check the recipe's origin and stated measurement standard before converting.

Measure for the task

Kitchen scales are often more repeatable for weight than packed or leveled volume measures. Ingredient preparation matters: chopped, sifted, melted, packed, and whole forms can occupy different volume. This converter performs unit arithmetic only and cannot correct a recipe's measurement method.

Fluid ounces measure volume; ounces in weight mode measure mass.
