Convert clearly labeled storage units

Enter a nonnegative amount and select source and destination units. Decimal prefixes such as GB use powers of 1,000; binary IEC prefixes such as GiB use powers of 1,024. Bits and bytes remain distinct.

Decimal and binary families

Decimal kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, and terabytes contain 1,000, 1,000,000, 1,000,000,000, and 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Binary kibibytes, mebibytes, gibibytes, and tebibytes contain 1,024, 1,048,576, 1,073,741,824, and 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.

Bits versus bytes

Eight bits make one byte. Lowercase b commonly labels bits, while uppercase B labels bytes, but interfaces do not always follow that convention. Storage capacities are often stated in bytes; network rates are often stated in bits per second. Read the complete unit label before comparing values.

Worked example

One decimal gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Dividing by 1,073,741,824 gives about 0.931323 GiB. In the other direction, one GiB equals about 1.073742 GB. Neither label is wrong; they describe different unit sizes.

Why displayed capacity can differ

A drive marketed with decimal units may be displayed by software using binary arithmetic with a decimal-looking label. Formatting, filesystems, recovery partitions, metadata, reserved space, snapshots, and installed data also reduce available space. Unit conversion alone cannot explain every difference between a package and a device screen.

Precision and large values

Results show up to twelve significant digits. JavaScript numbers cannot represent every integer byte exactly at extremely large magnitudes, so treat huge conversions as practical estimates. File sizes may also be rounded before you enter them.

Limitations and privacy

This page performs arithmetic only. It does not inspect files or drives, calculate transfer time, compress data, estimate filesystem overhead, or promise usable capacity. No entered value leaves the browser.

Data Storage FAQ

Are MB and MiB interchangeable?

No. MB is decimal and MiB is binary; the difference grows with larger prefixes.

How many bits are in a byte?

Eight bits make one byte for these conversions.

Can I convert a download speed here?

You can convert the data amount, but use Data Transfer Time Calculator for rate and duration.
