Attendance formula

Attendance percentage equals sessions attended divided by sessions held, multiplied by 100. Missed sessions equal held minus attended. Keeping the fraction beside the percentage makes it easier to check whether the counts were entered in the correct order.

Equal session weighting

This focused calculation treats every recorded session as one equal unit. A short seminar and a long lab therefore count the same. When a school weights credit hours, meeting minutes, excused absences, or required activities differently, use its official method instead of substituting this simple ratio.

Worked example

A student attends 18 of 20 held classes. Dividing 18 by 20 gives 0.9, so attendance is 90.00%. The missed count is two, and the displayed fraction remains 18 / 20. This describes the entered record only.

Checking the underlying record

Confirm that “held” excludes canceled meetings and includes every session covered by the report. Decide how partial attendance is recorded before counting. If the source system uses half sessions or hours, this whole-session calculator cannot reproduce that policy without first converting the record into consistent units.

Assumptions and limitations

Inputs must be whole nonnegative counts, held must be at least one, and attended cannot exceed held. The page does not decide whether an absence is excused, predict eligibility, interpret school policy, calculate a future target, or verify a registrar's record. Rounding to two decimal places may hide a smaller difference in the displayed percentage.

Attendance Percentage FAQ

Can attendance exceed 100%?

Not in this model, so attended counts above held are rejected.

Why is zero sessions held invalid?

A percentage cannot be calculated when its denominator is zero.

Does an excused absence count as attended?

This calculator cannot decide that. Follow the institution's recordkeeping rule.
