How weighted final grades work

Your completed coursework contributes its current grade multiplied by the non-final share of the course. The final exam contributes its score multiplied by the final's weight. Solving that weighted-grade equation for the exam score gives: (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with weight written as a decimal.

Worked example

A student has an 82% before a final worth 25% and wants an 85% overall. Existing work contributes 82 × 0.75 = 61.5 points toward the course grade. The target needs 23.5 more points from the final. Dividing 23.5 by 0.25 gives a required final-exam score of 94%.

Reading results above 100 or below zero

A result above 100% means the target cannot be reached under the entered weighting unless extra credit is available. A result at or below zero means the target is already secured even with a zero on the final, assuming no separate minimum-exam rule. Neither result says the exam is optional; attendance or passing policies may still apply.

Make sure “current grade” means the right thing

Gradebooks differ. Some show performance on completed work only; others already count the ungraded final as zero or display category totals with special weighting. This calculator expects the grade on work completed before the final, normalized to 100% of that completed portion. Check the syllabus or ask the instructor if the displayed number uses another method.

Planning with a range

One exact target can create false precision. Try several realistic targets and compare the required scores. Also account for rounding rules: an instructor may keep full decimals, round to one place, or use fixed letter-grade thresholds. A displayed 89.5 does not automatically become a 90.

Assumptions and limitations

The calculation assumes one remaining final, ordinary weighted averaging, and no dropped scores, replacement rules, curves, bonus points, category minimums, or future assignments. It cannot predict grading decisions or guarantee a course outcome. Enter percentages as numbers such as 82, not decimals such as 0.82.
