A wave is one simultaneous group
If one oven, machine, worker, or process handles several batches at once, those batches share the same elapsed interval. Ten batches with capacity for three at a time require four waves: three full waves of three and one final wave containing the remaining batch.
Calculation method
Wave count is total batches divided by parallel capacity, rounded up. Processing time is waves multiplied by minutes per batch. One-time setup is added once. The model assumes every wave takes the full entered duration, including a partially filled final wave.
Worked example
Twelve batches taking 45 minutes each need 540 minutes when processed one at a time. With capacity for three at once, they need four waves, or 180 processing minutes. Adding 30 minutes of setup produces 210 minutes, displayed as 3 hours 30 minutes.
Separate elapsed time from labor time
Parallel work can shorten the clock without reducing labor or machine-hours. Three machines running for two hours represent two elapsed hours but six machine-hours. This calculator reports elapsed duration only and does not estimate staffing, cost, energy, or resource utilization.
Account for changeovers and delays
Use one-time setup only when preparation happens once. Cleaning, loading, cooling, inspection, travel, handoff, or changeover between every wave should be added to the per-batch duration or modeled separately. Variable durations require a schedule rather than one constant average.
Assumptions and limitations
All parallel slots start together, have equal capacity, and remain available. There is no queuing priority, dependency, downtime, overlap between stages, partial completion credit, or calendar scheduling. The answer is a planning estimate based on idealized constant durations.
