Core transfer-time formula
Time in seconds equals total bits divided by bits per second. Decimal MB, GB, and TB use powers of 1,000; MiB, GiB, and TiB use powers of 1,024. Byte-per-second rate choices are multiplied by eight before division.
Rate labels matter
Mbps means megabits per second, while MB/s means megabytes per second. Because one byte contains eight bits, 100 MB/s is eight times 100 Mbps. Internet plans commonly advertise bits per second, while copy dialogs may show bytes per second.
Worked example
A 10 GB decimal download contains 80 gigabits. At a sustained 100 Mbps, ideal time is 800 seconds, or 13 minutes 20 seconds. Adding 10 percent overhead produces 880 seconds, or 14 minutes 40 seconds.
Overhead is a planning adjustment
The percentage multiplies ideal time. It can represent protocol overhead, retries, encryption work, variable throughput, or other expected drag, but it is not measured from your connection. If you know observed sustained throughput, entering that rate with zero overhead may be clearer.
Why real transfers vary
Wi-Fi conditions, congestion, server limits, disk speed, small-file overhead, latency, CPU load, throttling, competing traffic, error correction, and route changes all affect duration. Headline link speed is a ceiling, not a promise that one transfer sustains it.
Limitations and privacy
