US MPG calculation
In US mode, distance in miles is divided by miles per US gallon. Multiplying the resulting gallons by price per gallon gives estimated cost. The MPG input must use US gallons; imperial MPG describes a larger gallon and would produce a different result.
Metric consumption calculation
In metric mode, distance in kilometers is multiplied by liters per 100 kilometers and divided by 100. Fuel liters multiplied by the entered price per liter gives cost. Unlike MPG, a lower L/100 km value means less fuel used for the same distance.
Worked examples
A 300-mile one-way trip at 30 MPG needs 10 US gallons. At 3.50 per gallon, estimated fuel cost is 35.00. In metric mode, 500 kilometers at 8 L/100 km needs 40 liters; at 1.70 per liter, the numeric cost is 68.00 in the currency represented by the entered price.
Use realistic inputs
Published efficiency can differ from a particular trip. Traffic, idling, speed, weather, elevation, load, towing, tire pressure, route, and vehicle condition all affect consumption. A recent trip average measured in the same units is often a better planning input than an ideal rating.
Assumptions and limitations
This page performs arithmetic only. It does not fetch fuel prices, select a route, add detours, model traffic or idling, convert currencies, compare vehicles, calculate emissions, split expenses, determine reimbursement, or provide driving advice. Round trip exactly doubles entered one-way distance. The result is a plain numeric amount in whatever currency the entered price represents.

Does US mode use imperial gallons?
No. MPG here means miles per US gallon.
Can price be zero?
Yes. A zero price produces zero cost while still calculating fuel volume.
What if the return route is different?
Leave round trip off and enter the combined distance as one total.
