What the grid represents
This is a packing estimate for equal rectangles aligned in straight rows and columns. Gap applies only between neighboring items, not as a perimeter margin. Subtract wall clearances, fixed furniture, aisles, doors, or unusable zones from the room dimensions before entry when a simple reduced rectangle reasonably represents the available area.
Calculation method
Along each axis, the count is the room dimension plus one gap, divided by the item dimension plus one gap, rounded down. Adding one gap to the numerator avoids charging for a gap after the final item. The tool repeats the calculation with length and width swapped, then chooses the larger count.
Worked example
In a 30-by-20-foot clear rectangle, 6-by-3-foot tables with 2-foot gaps fit four along the length and four across the width, for 16 tables. Rotating them fits six by two, or 12. The first orientation therefore wins under this simple grid model.
Equal count does not mean equal usefulness
When both orientations hold the same number, the page keeps the unrotated result. Real layouts may favor the other direction because of sightlines, service access, outlets, doors, focal points, or walking routes. Use the footprint dimensions to sketch and review the actual arrangement.
Capacity and safety boundaries
An item count is not an occupancy capacity. The calculator does not evaluate required aisles, exits, fire rules, accessibility, seating use, circulation, supervision, or venue limits. Those requirements can reduce the usable rectangle substantially and must be handled by appropriate plans and authorities.
Assumptions and limitations
Items cannot overlap or extend outside the entered rectangle. The model does not stagger rows, mix sizes, nest shapes, use diagonal placement, avoid columns, or optimize irregular areas. Measurements and displayed footprints are rounded, while counts use the underlying values.
