Enter the pre-tip bill, tip percentage, tax as a currency amount, and number of people. Select Split bill to see tip, combined total, and equal per-person breakdown.
Arithmetic used
Tip equals the entered bill multiplied by tip percentage divided by 100. Combined total equals bill plus tip plus entered tax amount. Every component is divided by the whole number of people, making the split equal rather than itemized.
Why tax is entered as an amount
The receipt already supplies its tax total, so entering that amount avoids guessing rates, taxable items, rounding rules, or location policy. This page performs arithmetic only. It does not state what should be taxed or whether a tip should use a pre-tax or after-tax base.
Worked example
For a $100.00 pre-tip bill, 20% tip, $8.00 tax amount, and four people, tip is $20.00 and combined total is $128.00. Each person pays $32.00: $25.00 bill, $5.00 tip, and $2.00 tax.
Handling real payment rounding
Displayed shares round to cents. When a total cannot divide evenly, individually rounded shares may differ from the exact combined total by a cent or two. Assign that small remainder explicitly rather than assuming every payment processor will reconcile it automatically.
Assumptions and limitations
All people receive equal shares of every component, and tip is based only on the entered pre-tip bill. The calculator does not allocate individual orders, coupons, fees, uneven tips, separate tax treatment, currencies, exchange rates, payment advice, or tipping policy. Negative amounts and fractional people are rejected.
Split Bill FAQ
Can one person pay more?
Not in this equal-split tool; calculate custom shares separately.
Should tax be included in the bill field?
Enter the amount used as the tip base under bill and enter receipt tax separately.
Does the currency symbol change calculations?
No. Dollar formatting is a display convention; all arithmetic uses entered numbers.
