Choose the format for the real system

Code 39 handles uppercase letters, digits, and a small punctuation set, making it useful for internal labels and inventory identifiers. EAN-13 and UPC-A are numeric retail symbologies with fixed lengths and check digits. A barcode image does not register a product identifier or assign a legitimate retail number. Obtain identifiers through the organization required by the retailer or supply chain.

Validation and check digits

For EAN-13, enter twelve digits and the tool calculates the thirteenth, or enter all thirteen for validation. UPC-A works the same way with eleven data digits and one check digit. The check digit catches common transcription errors; it does not prove ownership, product identity, price, or database registration. Invalid lengths, unsupported characters, and incorrect check digits are rejected instead of being drawn.

Worked example

Enter 590123412345 as an EAN-13 value. Weighted digit arithmetic produces the check digit 7, so the complete label becomes 5901234123457. For an internal shelf label, Code 39 can encode RACK-24B. Keep the quiet white space around either symbol when placing it in another design.

Printing and scanning

Dark bars on a plain light background provide the safest contrast. Avoid stretching output after download, placing text over bars, cropping the margins, or printing below a scanner's practical resolution. SVG remains crisp at different sizes; PNG is rendered at twice the preview dimensions. Test the final printed label with the scanners and materials used in the actual workflow.
