What each compression setting changes
Fewer colors usually save space with the smallest change to timing. Smaller dimensions reduce the number of pixels stored in every frame and often produce the biggest savings. Keeping every second or third frame removes animation detail while preserving overall duration by extending the remaining frame delays. These methods re-encode the GIF and are not lossless.
Worked example: fitting a chat upload limit
Suppose a 900-pixel reaction GIF is too large for a chat service. Start with 128 colors and 75% dimensions while keeping every frame. If the result remains too large, try 64 colors or every second frame. Change one setting at a time when visual quality matters, because that makes the source of banding, softness, or choppy motion easier to identify.
Color palettes and photographic GIFs
GIF frames can use at most 256 indexed colors. Flat illustrations, screen captures, and simple memes often survive a 64- or 128-color palette well. Photographic scenes, gradients, smoke, and shadows are more likely to show color bands. The encoder does not add photographic dithering, so compare the preview closely before replacing a source file.
Privacy, memory, and processing time
Decoding and rebuilding every frame uses memory proportional to pixel count and frame count. A long, high-resolution animation may take noticeably longer than its file size suggests. Limits and output assumptions
Transparent source pixels are composited onto white during transformations. Fine transparency edges may therefore change. Metadata and unusual application extensions are not copied.
