Scale or set exact dimensions for an animated GIF

Choose a GIF to read its original dimensions. Use the adjustment slider to scale both dimensions together from 25% through 400% of the original when the 2,000-pixel limit permits, or select Enter exact dimensions for a custom width and height. Select Resize GIF, review the animation, and download the new file. Every frame receives the same output dimensions and processing remains on this device.

Choose dimensions from the destination

Start with the place where the GIF will appear. A forum avatar, email signature, website illustration, and presentation each have different limits. Use exact published requirements when available. Shrinking is generally forgiving; enlarging cannot restore detail missing from the source and may make edges or compression artifacts more obvious.

Worked example: resize for a 480 × 320 slot

A source GIF measures 960 × 640 pixels and must fit a 480 × 320 content area. Enter 480 and 320 to preserve its original 3:2 shape at half size. The new animation contains one quarter as many pixels per frame, which can reduce file size substantially even though every frame and delay remains.

Aspect ratio and distortion

This tool uses the width and height exactly as entered. If those values have a different ratio from the source, circles become ovals and people may look stretched. To preserve shape, multiply both original dimensions by the same factor. For example, reducing 800 × 600 by 50% gives 400 × 300.

Animation timing and color

Resizing changes pixels, not intended playback speed. Frame delays are carried into the new animation, subject to GIF timing precision. Frames are re-encoded into indexed color palettes, so gradients or photographs may show different banding even when the dimensions stay close to the original.

Privacy and technical limits

Files never leave this browser tab. Inputs are limited to 50 MB, 800 frames, and 2,000 pixels per side, while output width and height must remain between 1 and 2,000 pixels. Large animations require significant temporary memory because each composited frame must be decoded before resizing.

GIF resizing FAQ

Will resizing make the file smaller?

Reducing dimensions usually helps, but palette and frame structure also affect size. Use the GIF Compressor for more controls.

Can I resize only one frame?

No. One shared canvas size defines a GIF animation, so this page transforms every frame.

Does it preserve transparency?

Transformed frames use a white background. Keep the original when transparent edges are required.
