Choose one JPG or JPEG. For a normal conversion, select Convert to PNG. To remove a background, enable Make a color transparent, click the source image or choose a color manually, and adjust match tolerance before converting. Everything stays on this device.

What conversion can and cannot do

PNG stores decoded pixels without another round of lossy compression and can include transparency. It cannot reverse compression already present in the JPG. Blocks, ringing, blur, and missing detail remain part of the image even after conversion.

Making a selected color transparent

JPEG has no transparency and rarely keeps a perfectly uniform background after compression. Click a representative background area, then use match tolerance to include nearby channel values. Zero removes exact RGB matches only. Higher values remove a wider color range. Inspect edges carefully because an aggressive tolerance can erase similarly colored parts of the subject.

Worked example conversion

A product photo has a nearly white background. Enable transparency, click a clean white area, and begin near tolerance 20. Convert and inspect the checkerboard-backed result. If white specks remain, raise tolerance slightly. If pale parts of the product disappear, lower it or choose a cleaner background pixel.

Why the PNG may be larger: JPEG represents photographs compactly by discarding some information. PNG preserves every decoded pixel and its alpha channel exactly. A photo with millions of subtly different colors therefore tends to require far more space as PNG. A larger result is normal and does not mean detail was restored.

Good reasons to choose PNG

Use PNG when a service explicitly requests it, when later edits need stable pixels, or when a simple solid background should become transparent. For finished photographs, keeping JPEG or converting to WebP is usually more space-efficient. Renaming .jpg to .png does not convert the file.

Local optimization and privacy

The browser decodes the JPG, applies optional transparency to local pixel data, and uses locally hosted OxiPNG WebAssembly for output. Nothing is uploaded. EXIF camera, date, and GPS metadata are normally omitted, while orientation is applied to the pixels before encoding.

Limitations and assumptions

Input is limited to one static JPG of 30 MB or less and 40 megapixels or less. Color removal is best for flat, distinct backgrounds; it is not AI subject segmentation, edge matting, or automatic background removal. Hair, shadows, reflections, and backgrounds sharing subject colors may need manual cleanup in an editor.

Will this improve image quality?

No. It avoids new lossy encoding but cannot restore information the JPEG discarded.

Can the PNG have transparency?

Yes. Enable color transparency and select which color range should receive zero alpha.

Why is there no quality slider?

PNG encoding is lossless, so the relevant background-removal control is match tolerance rather than image quality.
