Why convert JPEG photographs to WebP

WebP often stores web photographs more compactly than older JPEG encoding at a comparable visual quality. Smaller downloads can reduce page transfer size, especially across a gallery or product catalog. Actual savings depend on detail, noise, source compression, dimensions, and the chosen quality.

Lossy and lossless settings

Lossy WebP is usually the useful choice for photographs. Start near quality 82 to 88, then inspect faces, text, gradients, and fine edges. Lossless WebP preserves the decoded JPEG pixels exactly, but it cannot undo the source’s earlier JPEG artifacts and may create a larger file. Lossless mode is mainly useful when avoiding another lossy pass matters more than size.

Worked example

A small business has twenty 1600-pixel product photos already saved as JPEG. Select the files, choose lossy WebP at quality 84, and convert them as one batch. The ZIP keeps separate output files. Compare representative images at 100% and record total byte savings before changing site references.

Safe website migration

Creating WebP files does not update HTML, CSS, a CMS, or a CDN. Upload new files, test them at their real URLs, and keep JPEG fallbacks where required by the project. Avoid changing file extensions without changing file contents; this tool performs a real decode and re-encode.

Privacy and metadata

Local WebAssembly performs encoding in the browser. No selected photograph is uploaded. Re-encoding usually strips EXIF camera information, GPS coordinates, comments, thumbnails, and embedded color profiles. That may be desirable for public web images, but retain originals when metadata has business or archival value.

Limitations and assumptions

Each JPG may be at most 30 MB and 40 megapixels. Dimensions are unchanged; use Image Resizer when oversized source pixels are the main problem. Some older software does not accept WebP. A high-quality or lossless output can be larger than the source, so byte-size reporting matters more than format assumptions.
