When PNG-to-JPG conversion helps

PNG works well for transparency, screenshots, diagrams, and crisp interface graphics. For photographic pixels, a JPEG can be considerably smaller and is accepted by many forms that explicitly request JPG. Conversion is useful when compatibility or file size matters, but it is not automatically a better choice for every PNG.

What happens to transparent pixels

JPEG has no alpha channel. The converter first draws a solid background, then draws the PNG over it before JPEG encoding. White is suitable for many documents and listings. Choose another color when the final image will sit on a known background. Soft, partially transparent edges are blended into that chosen color.

Worked example conversion

Consider a 1600 × 1200 PNG photograph exported at 5 MB. If it has no transparency, choose quality 85 and white background. The resulting JPG remains 1600 × 1200 and may be much smaller. If the PNG is a flat-color logo with sharp lettering, JPEG artifacts may make it look worse even when the file is smaller.

Quality and visual checking

JPEG quality trades file size for fidelity. Inspect small type, hair, foliage, gradients, and high-contrast boundaries because those reveal artifacts quickly. A value around 80–90 is a practical starting point, not a universal rule. Keep the PNG source and compare the downloaded result at its real display size.

Privacy and metadata

The image is read into browser memory and encoded with a locally hosted MozJPEG WebAssembly codec. It is not uploaded to AwesomeTools or a package provider. The resulting JPEG generally does not preserve PNG text chunks, color-profile metadata, or other embedded fields. Pixel dimensions are preserved.

Limitations and assumptions

The input must be one static PNG no larger than 30 MB or 40 megapixels. Animated PNG is rejected to prevent accidental frame loss. JPEG cannot preserve transparency, animation, or exact lossless pixels. Line art and screenshots may be larger or less clear as JPG. Browser color management can affect unusual profiles.
