Read a representative-fraction map scale

Measure a straight or traced map distance in centimeters, enter the denominator from a scale such as 1:50,000, and choose a ground unit. The result multiplies map length by that denominator.

What 1:N means

A representative fraction uses the same unit on both sides. At 1:50,000, one centimeter on the map represents 50,000 centimeters on the ground. It also means one inch represents 50,000 inches, though this form asks for a centimeter measurement to keep the input unambiguous.

Worked example

A measured map distance of 4 centimeters at 1:50,000 represents 200,000 ground centimeters. That equals 2,000 meters or 2 kilometers. If miles are selected, the same ground distance is about 1.24274 miles.

Measure curves in short segments

A ruler works for a straight separation. For a winding road or trail, use a flexible thread, map wheel, or many short segments, then enter the combined map length. The result reflects the measured line; cutting corners during measurement makes a curving route appear shorter.

Printed and on-screen maps can be resized

A stated scale is valid only at the map's intended physical size. Printing with “fit to page,” photocopying, image resizing, browser zoom, or viewing a responsive digital map can change the effective scale. A scale bar resized with the map can be safer than a printed representative fraction.

Map distance is not travel distance

Map projection, terrain slope, elevation change, road geometry, inaccessible land, and route choice can make real travel differ from a flat measured line. Small-scale maps also simplify features. Use an appropriate current navigation source for route planning and safety decisions.

Limitations and precision

This page does not read an image, calibrate pixels, trace a route, correct a projection, account for terrain, or verify that a printed map retained scale. Values are floating-point estimates displayed with practical precision. All inputs remain in the browser.
