How to use Median Calculator

Enter comparable numbers, then select Calculate. The tool sorts the values and returns the middle value, plus a compact summary.

How the median works

For an odd count, the median is the middle sorted value. For an even count, it is the average of the two middle values. For 2, 5, 8, and 20, the median is (5 + 8) ÷ 2 = 6.5.

Median versus average

Median is less affected by an unusually large or small value. Average uses every value and can better represent totals. Choose the measure that matches the question.

Median Calculator FAQ

Can I use decimals or negative numbers?

Yes. Use plain numbers without currency symbols or thousands separators.

Does input order matter?

No. The calculator sorts values before finding the middle.

Definition and result meaning

The median is the central value after sorting. Half the observations lie at or below it and half lie at or above it, subject to ties.

Median describes position rather than total magnitude. It resists a few extreme values but can hide changes elsewhere in the distribution.

Logic and formula

For odd count, select the single middle sorted value. For even count, this calculator averages the two middle values.

Keep full precision through intermediate steps when checking the result. Round only the final value to the precision the task needs; early rounding can compound into a visibly different answer.

Worked example

For 2, 5, 8, and 20, the middle pair is 5 and 8, so median = (5 + 8) ÷ 2 = 6.5.

Two values are below or equal to 6.5 and two are above or equal, confirming its central position.

Assumptions, edge cases, and limitations

An empty list has no median. Inputs must be comparable. Repeated values remain separate observations, and the even-count convention returns their middle-pair mean.

Median alone does not show range, clusters, or sample size. It can be identical for datasets with very different shapes.

Calculations run in this browser and entered values are not submitted to Awesome Tools. JavaScript numbers have finite precision, so extremely large values or long decimal expansions can be rounded. Use exact-decimal or domain-specific software when contractual, scientific, or financial rules require controlled precision.

Common mistakes

Common errors include selecting the middle input before sorting, dropping duplicates, and assuming median and mean answer the same question.

Write down units beside inputs before calculating. A numerically correct result can still be unusable when values represent different units, periods, populations, or definitions.

Result-checking FAQ

Can a median be absent from the entered values?

Yes. For an even count, averaging the middle pair can create a value not present in the list.

How should I verify an important result?

Recalculate from the original inputs, confirm units and signs, and use the stated inverse or reasonableness check. For decisions governed by a school, retailer, contract, measurement standard, or other external rule, verify that rule before applying the result.
