What scientific notation means

Scientific notation writes a nonzero number as a coefficient multiplied by a power of ten. Normalized form keeps the coefficient's absolute value at least 1 but less than 10. This compact structure makes very large and very small magnitudes easier to compare and reduces the risk of losing track of zeros.

Moving the decimal point

For a large number, move the decimal left until one nonzero digit remains before it; the number of moves becomes a positive exponent. For a small fraction, move right to the first nonzero digit; the exponent is negative. Zero is a special case and is displayed as 0 × 10⁰.

Worked example

Enter 123000 with three significant digits. Moving the decimal five places left gives a coefficient of 1.23, so the scientific form is 1.23 × 10⁵ and E notation is 1.23e+5. The standard decimal remains 123000.

Significant digits and rounding

The chosen digit count controls coefficient rounding, not measurement certainty. Entering 9.999 with three significant digits rounds to 10.0, which must renormalize to 1.00 × 10¹. Trailing zeros in a displayed coefficient communicate requested precision, but they cannot recover precision absent from the original measurement.

Supported input and limitations

Input may include a sign, decimal point, and an e exponent. Commas, unit labels, multiplication signs, and expressions such as 2+3 are rejected. JavaScript numbers cover roughly 10⁻³²⁴ through 10³⁰⁸; values outside that range may underflow to zero or overflow and are rejected. Decimal display is limited to practical browser formatting.

Checking scientific form

Confirm the coefficient is between 1 and 10 in magnitude and that exponent direction makes sense: positive powers describe values at least 10, while negative powers describe nonzero values below 1. To verify, move the decimal by the exponent or compare the E notation in a calculator that accepts it.
