Split a list into random, even-sized groups

Put one participant on each line, choose the number of teams, and select Generate teams. The page shuffles names with Web Crypto and deals them across teams so sizes differ by no more than one.

How teams are formed

Blank lines are removed, but spelling and repeated names are preserved because two people can share a name. A cryptographically strong browser random source drives an unbiased Fisher–Yates shuffle. Shuffled entries are then assigned in rotation to Team 1, Team 2, and so on.

What balanced means here

This tool balances only headcount. With 11 people and 3 teams, sizes become 4, 4, and 3. It knows nothing about skill, experience, roles, preferences, accessibility, or prior pairings. If those factors matter, treat the random draw as a starting point and make transparent adjustments afterward.

Worked example

Enter Ava, Ben, Chen, Dia, Eli, Fran, and Gus, then request three teams. After shuffling, the first team receives three people and the other two receive two each. Selecting the button again creates a fresh draw; copying produces a plain-text list suitable for chat or notes.

Fairness and randomness

A fair shuffle does not guarantee every outcome looks mixed. Friends may land together and the same person may appear first in consecutive draws. Repeatedly regenerating until a preferred result appears undermines a neutral draw. Agree on rules before generating when participants care about fairness.

Assumptions and limits

Each nonblank line is one entry. Team count must be at least two and cannot exceed participant count or 50. The tool does not detect duplicates, remember past teams, seed reproducible draws, or create schedules. Preparing a clean list

Use identifiers that participants recognize, especially when names repeat. Do not put notes on separate lines unless those notes should become participants. Review the count before sharing. For classrooms or workplaces, avoid pasting sensitive personal details when a first name or neutral label will do.
