Result
Number every page in sequence
Choose a PDF, set the first printed number, select a top or bottom position, and choose a font size. Select Add page numbers. The tool writes one number on every page and creates a new downloadable PDF. Open the result and check pages with unusually small margins before distributing it.
Printed numbers versus PDF page indexes
A viewer always knows the internal first, second, and third pages, but those indexes are not necessarily visible when printed. This tool draws ordinary text onto each page. Starting at a number other than one is useful when a PDF is one section of a larger binder or when front matter was prepared separately.
Worked example
A report begins after twelve pages of introductory material stored in another file. Enter 13 as the starting number, choose bottom center, and keep the 12-point size. A seven-page PDF receives visible numbers 13 through 19. Merge it after the introduction and verify that the sequence continues naturally.
Position and page geometry
Bottom-center numbers sit 20 PDF points above the lower edge. Right-aligned choices sit 24 points inside the right edge. Pages can have different sizes, so placement is calculated separately for each one. Existing artwork is not moved to create space; the number is overlaid in the selected margin area.
Privacy and preservation
Numbering occurs entirely in browser memory. The source is not uploaded or changed. Existing page contents are copied, then standard Helvetica text is added. The result remains a PDF rather than being converted into page images, so ordinary text and vector content retain their source form.
Limitations and assumptions
The tool numbers every page and does not skip a cover, use Roman numerals, add “Page 1 of 10,” or place different styles in separate sections. It cannot detect whether a footer already occupies the chosen position. Added numbers may overlap crop marks, scans, or existing footers. Digital signatures are not preserved as valid endorsements of the modified file.
Page Number FAQ
Can numbering start at zero or a negative value?
Yes, although positive numbering is more common.
Does this change viewer page labels?
No. It adds visible text to page content.
Can I remove numbers afterward?
Not reliably with this tool, so keep the original.
