Choose what the smaller file may change
Select a PDF and choose a method. Structural optimization preserves text, links, vector artwork, and page content, but its size reduction may be modest. An image-based copy can be much smaller for scans and slide decks, but each page becomes a JPEG image. Choose Compress PDF, review the reported output size, then download the new file.
Two different kinds of PDF compression
A PDF is a container that may hold text, fonts, vector drawings, photographs, forms, attachments, and already-compressed streams. Structural optimization rewrites that container efficiently without intentionally changing visible content. Image-based compression renders each page and rebuilds the document from JPEG images. That second method removes much of the original structure, which is why it can reduce image-heavy documents more aggressively.
Worked example
Suppose a 14-page scanned application is 18 MB and an email portal accepts only 10 MB. Start with Balanced. The pages are rendered at practical screen-and-print resolution and stored at 82% JPEG quality. If the result remains too large, try Smallest. Compare several text-heavy pages at normal zoom before sending the output.
When structural optimization is better
Use structural mode for contracts, reports, exported web pages, or documents whose selectable text and clickable links matter. A source already produced by modern PDF software may become only slightly smaller or even remain similar in size. That is an honest result: repeatedly recompressing an efficient file cannot guarantee savings without discarding information.
Privacy and local processing
Your document stays in this browser tab. No upload, account, or remote conversion service is used. Local work is especially useful for resumes, invoices, school records, and internal documents. Browser memory still has limits, so close other heavy tabs before processing a large scan.
Limitations and assumptions
Image-based output loses searchable text, links, forms, bookmarks, signatures, annotations, accessibility tags, and vector sharpness. It should not replace an archival original. Structural mode does not perform OCR, font subsetting, JBIG2 conversion, or Ghostscript-style stream analysis. Password-protected files are unsupported. Always keep the source until the downloaded result has been opened and checked.
Compress PDF FAQ
Why did structural mode barely help?
The source may already use compressed images and efficient object streams.
Will image mode keep selectable text?
No. It creates a visual copy of every page.
Can compression improve image quality?
No. It can only preserve or remove source detail.
