Aim a video below an upload limit

Choose a video, review its preview, select the maximum file size and width, then press Compress for Discord. The selected size is a ceiling, not a target. A compatible MP4 already below both limits is preserved without re-encoding; otherwise the tool calculates a bitrate below both the selected ceiling and source bitrate. The download keeps the original base name with a -discord-ready or -discord-compressed suffix.

A ceiling, not a request to add bytes

The encoder reserves a five-percent margin below the selected maximum. It also caps calculated bitrate below the source's average bitrate, preventing a compression job from intentionally spending more data than the original. When a compatible MP4 already fits both limits, copying it unchanged is safer and faster than a needless lossy encode.

Worked example: fit a gameplay clip

For a 60-second clip and a 25 MB maximum, the available total bitrate is roughly 3,240 kbps after the safety margin. If the source averages only 1,000 kbps and already fits the chosen width, re-encoding toward 3,240 kbps would waste space. The tool instead preserves a compliant MP4 or keeps a necessary conversion below the source rate.

Why duration controls quality

A size ceiling is a fixed bucket. Ten seconds can spend far more data on each second than ten minutes. Fast games, confetti, foliage, camera noise, and screen text are difficult to compress. If calculated video bitrate becomes too low, the tool stops and asks for a larger target or shorter source instead of creating a predictably unusable file.

Resolution and encoding choices

Options from 320 through 1920 pixels cover tiny chat clips through full-HD sources. The maximum width prevents oversized frames from consuming bits that could preserve motion, and smaller sources are not enlarged. Re-encoded output uses H.264 video, AAC audio, and MP4 fast-start metadata. Single-pass encoding keeps browser work manageable but is less exact than a slow multi-pass desktop workflow.

Privacy, performance, and limitations

FFmpeg WebAssembly runs on your device, and no source is uploaded to Awesome Tools. Large files can consume significant memory and take longer than their playback duration on a phone. Input is limited to 200 MB. Container overhead can still cause a small size miss. Always verify Discord's current displayed limit and the downloaded byte size before relying on the result.

Discord compression FAQ

Why was my video copied instead of recompressed?

Its MP4 container, byte size, and width already satisfied your selections. Re-encoding would add quality loss without helping it fit.

Which width should I choose?

Start at 1280 for normal clips, 854 or 640 for tighter limits, and 480 or 320 when size matters more than detail.

Does this contact Discord?

No. It only creates a local file for you to upload yourself.
