Make a GIF from a short video moment

Choose a video, play or scrub its preview, and drag the start and end sliders around the moment you want. Numeric start and length fields remain available for precise timing. Select GIF width and frame rate, then press Create GIF. Clips are limited to thirty seconds, and the download keeps the source base name with a -clip.gif suffix.

Use only the moment that matters

GIF is useful for short looping reactions, software demonstrations, and motion inside documents that do not play video. It is inefficient for long or photographic footage. Start time is measured from the beginning of the video, and clip length determines where conversion stops. The chosen range must remain inside the source duration.

Worked example: capture a three-second action

If the interesting action begins at 4.5 seconds, enter 4.5 for start and 3 for length. A 480-pixel width at 12 frames per second creates 36 frames. That is a sensible first attempt for chat or documentation. Reduce width or frame rate if the result is too large.

Width, frame rate, and palette

Width controls the number of pixels in every frame; height follows the source aspect ratio. Frame rate controls temporal detail. GIF also limits each frame sequence to an indexed palette. This tool creates a shared 128-color palette with dithering, balancing size against gradients and photographic detail. Fine color transitions may show texture or bands.

Why GIF files grow quickly

Unlike modern video codecs, GIF cannot predict motion efficiently between complex photographic frames. Doubling width can approach four times the pixel work, while doubling frame rate doubles frame count. A ten-second 640-pixel GIF may therefore be much larger than its source video. Keep clips short and choose the smallest acceptable dimensions.

Privacy and limitations

FFmpeg WebAssembly runs in this tab and receives no remote URL. Input is limited to 200 MB, output clips to thirty seconds, and local memory may impose lower limits. Audio is discarded because GIF has no audio track. Transparency, subtitles, metadata, and exact variable frame timing are not preserved. Continuous looping is written into the GIF.

Video to GIF FAQ

Why is my GIF larger than the video?

Modern video compression handles photographic motion much more efficiently than GIF.

Can the GIF include sound?

No. GIF is an image-animation format without audio.

What settings should I try first?

Use three to five seconds, 480 pixels, and 12 fps, then reduce one setting if needed.
